How it works

Three taps from curiosity to collection

No field guides, no guessing. Just point, scan, and watch your Dex grow.

1

Point and scan

Aim your camera at any animal, bug, or bird in the wild and tap once. It works on creatures big and small.

2

AI names the species

Our model identifies the exact species and anchors it to the real GBIF tree of life, then shares a fun fact about it.

3

Collect and complete

Every species joins your living Dex with its own creature to level up. Chase regional completion as your collection grows.

What makes it special

A real-world creature collector

🏆

World firsts, forever

The first person on Earth to scan a species claims a permanent first unlock. Your name on it for all time.

🧬

Real species, real science

Backed by the GBIF taxonomy backbone, every catch resolves to a real, canonical species, never a made-up monster.

📖

A living Dex

Watch your collection grow, level up your creatures, and chase regional completion as you go.

📸

Built to share

Every world first becomes a card built for Stories and your feed. Show the world exactly what you found first.

🗺️

Your catch map

Every scan drops a pin. Look back on exactly where in the world you found each creature.

First come, first scanned

Some species have never been scanned. One could be yours.

When you scan a species nobody has ever logged, you claim it. Your handle goes on that world first forever, and the moment becomes a card built to share.

The walk to work is different now

I scanned a moth on my balcony and got a world first. I have not stopped looking at bugs since.

@maya · 41 firsts

My kids beg to go on Scanimal walks. We have a family Dex competition going now.

@noor · 188 species

I started a daily streak in spring and have not missed a day. Leveling up my creatures is weirdly addictive.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is Scanimal free?

Yes. You get free scans every day, and you can collect and claim world firsts without paying. Scanimal Pro adds unlimited scans for the truly obsessed.

What animals does it work on?

Any real animal you can point a camera at, from mammals and birds to bugs, reptiles, fish, and amphibians. The pigeon on the sidewalk counts.

What is a world first?

When you are the first Scanimal player on Earth to scan a given species, you claim it. Your name stays on that world first permanently.

Do I need to be a good photographer?

Not at all. Get reasonably close, keep the animal in frame, and tap. If a shot is unclear, Scanimal asks for another one before it logs anything.

iOS and Android?

Both. Download on the App Store or Google Play and your Dex syncs to your account on any device.
